What makes Belgrade nightlife so special?
It all started back in the 60s, when the hippie movement influenced young people and they used to gather at the Ušće park as a meeting point. The music played there was rock’n’roll and soon enough the first underground clubs were formed. The people loved it, even though some public figures tried to ban the genre on the Belgrade radio.
Luckily, the city remained full of young people with free souls, ones that were longing for freedom and all that the capital had to offer them. Right after the 70s ended, new genres started showing up in Belgrade’s underground scene. Punk rock and reggae had the most influence on the young people, while new wave became popular with the older audience. The next couple of decades new genres came and went, but it wasn’t until 1990 when Belgrade got its first rave party.
The 90s saw a lot of changes in Serbia and so did the Belgrade nightlife. Clubs were opening, closing and being moved from one location to another all the time. This was also the golden age for the so-called “techno revolution”. It started in 1998 with three clubs that had more people than they could handle. By 2000 it wasn’t enough anymore; new, more spacious venues were needed, not only to accommodate the ever growing number of young people who wanted to party, but also to bring in more money.
Places like Akademija, Metropolis and the newly opened ‘diskotekas’ were packed full of visitors every night. They had the biggest shows with the most famous DJs that would attract over 5000 people on some nights. Still, the clubs weren’t big enough for that many people.
In this period there were also a lot of illegal parties taking place all around the city. It was a golden age for underground culture and Belgrade nightlife has never been as crazy as it once was. But remember: it was the time of war and revolution. It served as a means of escape from reality as well.
Despite this, Belgrade’s nightlife is still one of the best in Europe and it attracts a huge number of visitors from all around the world. Exchange students, sportsmen, tourists are mesmerized by the city and the nightlife it has to offer. Agencies have started offering team-building experiences, in fact, one of the most popular team-building activities is going out in Belgrade’s rich night-life.
The events planners claim that this kind of event actually works better if it takes place in such an environment. The Belgrade-based company which offers corporate entertainment packages claims that if they go to the pub crawl after work, it is much easier to establish new contacts. Team-building professionals also state that Belgrade has a lot to offer for those who are looking for a more thrilling experience. It is never a problem to find a place that will suit the needs of team-builders who seek adventure, as there is an abundance of all kinds of entertainment venues in Belgrade. But, we digress…
There are countless things one can do in Belgrade. There are a lot of festivals to attend, art exhibitions and museums to visit, different club events throughout the week to go to, etc., but it’s best if you plan your trip beforehand. Knowing exactly what you want to see or do will make your visit a lot easier.
Please note that the clubs are submitted to the government’s Covid regulations, thus perform accordingly. Please check out our updated rules of conduct in Serbia.
