Garden of History

The Belgrade Zoo has a captivating history that showcases its resilience and dedication to wildlife conservation. During the Austrian occupation of northern Serbia from 1717 to 1739, the governor, Charles Alexander, Duke of Württemberg, established a small menagerie, capturing and housing “wild beasts from the forests and mountains of Serbia” within cages at the Württemberg Palace in Belgrade. However, the Ottomans demolished the palace in 1743, marking the end of this early zoo.

It wasn’t until 1924 when Belgrade adopted its first general urban plan, that the vision of a zoo in the city took shape. The plan proposed the construction of the zoo in Topčider, on the outskirts of Belgrade. However, this plan did not materialize.

A zoo at a historic place

The present-day Belgrade Zoological Garden, also called the Garden of Good Hope (Vrt Dobre Nade) officially opened on July 12, 1936, covering an initial area of 3.5 hectares. The zoo is located in Kalemegdan Park within the walls of the Belgrade Kalemegdan fortress.

Its popularity quickly grew, attracting both locals and members of the Karađorđević dynasty. The zoo acquired its first animals through personal donations, with the mayor, Vlada Ilić, purchasing the initial group and the first manager, Aleksandar Krstić, acquiring a hippopotamus in 1937 to celebrate the birth of his son.

The zoo faced tremendous challenges during World War II, enduring bombings by the Nazis in 1941 and the Allies in 1944. These attacks resulted in extensive damage to the zoo’s infrastructure and the loss of most animals. The zoo recovered over time but faced difficulties in the 1980s, with neglectful animal care and living conditions.

Under the dedicated leadership of sculptor Vuk Bojović, who served as the zoo’s director from 1986 until his death in 2014, the Belgrade Zoo underwent significant improvements. Bojović enhanced animal living conditions, introduced new species, and transformed the zoo into a profitable institution.

The Belgrade Zoo’s history is marked by resilience, challenges, and a commitment to preserving wildlife. Its journey from a small menagerie to a renowned zoological garden showcases its evolution and determination to provide a remarkable experience for visitors while promoting conservation efforts.

Belgrade Zoo’s Remarkable Animal Stories

Within the history of the Belgrade Zoo, certain animals have left an indelible mark on the institution, and their contributions have been commemorated with monuments, as recognized by former director Vuk Bojović. Let’s delve into the captivating stories of these extraordinary creatures.

Sami the Chimpanzee – Sami, a spirited chimpanzee, achieved the feat of escaping from the zoo not once but twice in 1988. Sami never displayed any signs of hostility or harmed anyone during these adventures. On the first occasion, Director Vuk Bojović personally intervened, coaxing Sami into his car and safely returning him to the zoo. During the second escape, Sami found himself perched atop a residential rooftop (yeah, don’t put your hopes into imagining a skyscraper and King Kong dangling on top). Drawing a crowd of people who rallied behind him with slogans and encouragement until he was safely brought down. Tragically, Sami passed away unexpectedly in 1992, prompting the erection of a monument in his honor.

Gabi the Dog – Gabi served as a devoted guard dog at the zoo, tasked with patrolling the premises alongside another canine companion and a night watchman. One fateful night, Gabi’s acute hearing alerted her to an imminent danger before the guard could detect it: a jaguar had managed to break free from its enclosure. Without hesitation, Gabi confronted the jaguar, engaging in a fierce battle that lasted until reinforcements arrived. Her remarkable courage and selflessness prevented the jaguar from escaping and potentially harming others. Despite sustaining severe injuries, Gabi miraculously survived, earning her a monument as a testament to her bravery.

Muja the Alligator – Muja, an American alligator, holds the distinction of being recognized as the world’s oldest living specimen of his species. He joined the Belgrade Zoo’s collection in 1937, just a year after its establishment, and has remained a resident ever since. Muja endured the tumultuous years of World War II, surviving two bombings that claimed the lives of numerous animals. Now in his ninth decade, Muja peacefully resides in the zoo, eagerly awaiting the arrival of new visitors who come to marvel at the wonders of the Beo Zoo.
