These accommodations provide travelers with the perfect opportunity to immerse themselves in Serbian culture and connect with nature as well as locals.

Rural houses in rural Serbia

Serbia is a country full of culture, history, and natural beauty. It has some of the most rural areas in all of Europe, with small communities tucked away in pristine valleys and rolling hills. Exploring these areas on foot or by bicycle is the perfect way to discover the hidden gems that lie within Serbia’s countryside.

The villages are small but offer plenty to explore: from medieval churches and ancient ruins to traditional music and cuisine. There are quaint lakes for swimming, rivers for fishing, forests for hiking, and mountains for climbing all just a short distance away from any city center. The best part about exploring rural Serbia is that you don’t have to travel far at all—the villages are so close together that they’re practically connected! In addition to its beautiful scenery, rural Serbia is also renowned for its world-famous wines.

Salaš – a rural farm in the middle of no-where

Serbia is an increasingly popular tourist destination for those seeking to experience the iconic rural life of this Eastern European country. Tourists can find a variety of farms across the country that offer a unique glimpse into traditional Serbian farming practices and products. From fresh produce, eggs, milk, and meat to guided tours of the facilities, these farms provide visitors with an opportunity to immerse themselves in some of Serbia’s most rustic locations. These farms offer an opportunity to experience a taste of the rural lifestyle that has been part of Serbia’s culture for centuries. Visitors can purchase fresh, local produce, including eggs, milk, and meat from these farms. Many of the farms use traditional farming methods to grow their products, so visitors can get a glimpse into how things were done in the past.

Tours are also offered at some of these tourist farms, allowing visitors to explore the facility and learn about how the products are made and grown. The tours give insight into why these traditional farming practices have lasted so long in Serbia and help educate people on where their food comes from. Those visiting Serbia should take advantage of this unique opportunity to see firsthand how food is produced in rural areas and experience a taste of traditional Serbian life.

Vojvodina – the heart of rural houses in the north

Vojvodina, the northern part of Serbia, lies within the Pannonian Basin, bordered to the south by the national capital Belgrade and the Sava and Danube rivers. The administrative center, Novi Sad, is the second-largest city in Serbia. Modern Vojvodina is multi-ethnic and multicultural, a melting pot if you wish, with some 26 ethnic groups and six official languages. Before the Roman conquest in the 1st century BC, people of Celtic origin inhabited this area. Slavs settled in today’s Vojvodina in the 6th century. This region was also ruled by the Hungarian Kingdom, followed by an Austro-Hungarian reign before becoming part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1918.

The region has an incredibly rich cultural heritage, still visible through all these centuries, and its locals are known for their balanced and friendly mentality. This unique heritage can be experienced in one of the so-called ethno-houses or by spending time in a rural household.

You can choose to stay at Salas on the Danube river, a typical rural house for this region, or a farm where you can enjoy nature and their organically produced food.

Šumadija – central Serbia

Šumadija (pronounced [ʃumǎdija]), in central Serbia, is heavily covered with forests, hence the name “šuma” (forest). This region is very fertile, and it is known for its fruit production (apples, grapes, plums, cherries, strawberries, raspberries). The best known Serbian product Šljivovica (pronounced /ʃʎîʋoʋit͡sa/) is produced from plums that come from this region. The most common folk costume of Serbia comes from Šumadija. It includes the nation’s hat, the Šajkača (pronounced [ʃǎjkatʃa]), and the traditional leather footwear Opanci. Older villagers in this region can still be seen wearing their traditional costumes. The mentality of the people living in this region is known to be strong and bold with great activeness, healthy nerves, honesty, and humor.

Untouched nature, mountains, crystal clear rivers, lakes, and forests, this is the greenest part of Serbia which will leave you breathless and make you fall in love with this hidden gem.
